about-me.jpg

My name is Mae Jemison and I am the first African-American Astronaut.  I was born on October 17, 1956 and I am the youngest out of 3 children. Fluently, I can speak Russian, Japense, Swahili, and English. When I was 16 years old, I enrolled at stanford University and in 1977 I graduated with degrees in both Chemical Engineering and African- American studies. In 1981, I received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University and in 1983 I joined the Peace Corps.  When I was in the Peace Corps.,  I served in Liberia and Sierra Leone. After my time with the peace Corps., I went back to school to take graduate engineering courses. I applied for being an astronaut for NASA, but I got turned down the first time. In 1987, Jemison was accepted on my second application and I became 1 of the 15 candidates accepted from over 2,000 applicants. On September 12, 1992, I became the first African -American to become an Astronaut. The mission only lasted for 8 days, but it was a great experience. In March of 1993, I resigned from NASA.  After I resigned,I started my own company, the Jemison Group, that researches, markets, and develops science and technology, for daily life. In 1994, I  founded the Dorothy Jemison Foundation for Excellence and named the foundation in honor of my mother. One of the projects of my foundation is The Earth We Share (TEWS), an international science camp where students, ages 12 to 16, work to solve current global problems. It helps students build critical thinking skills and learn to solve solving problems through an experiential curriculum.  Recently, I have been in a fashiow show to raise money for heart disease. I have 2 cats and their names are Sneeze and Little Mama.
